The first meeting of OSUM at Iowa was held in the IMU from roughly 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, December 6th.

• Meeting opens.
• Brief discussion of the OSUM vision and purpose as described in the bylaws.
• OSUM Constitution is reviewed and ratified by a unanimous vote.
• OSUM Officers are elected:
  • Ryan Kopf is nominated for President and elected by a unanimous vote.
  • Mike Vitale is nominated for Vice President and elected by unanimous vote.
  • John Hughes is nominated for Secretary and elected by a unanimous vote.
• Discussion of OSUM Goals. The group agreed on the following goals:
  • Every member of OSUM to have one Sun Certification by the end of next year.
  • At least one meeting, in coordination with one tech talk, every month.
  • To work with campus ITS to have GIMP, OpenOffice, NetBeans or Sun Studio installed on at least 10 University PCs.
  • To add 20 new meetup members every semester.
  • To have every member complete at least one learning module (Sun Website) every month.
• Longer-term goals we discussed:
  • Development of team or individual development projects such as implementation of features for current open source software or development of new software.
  • Soliciting a hardware, software of monetary commitment from the University, Sun or other sources in support of the group goals.
• Discussion on general interests and topics we’d like to explore further
  • Java
  • Game Design
  • Web Design
  • Web Application Development
  • Application Development
  • Open Source Solutions and Software we found useful
  • Assistive devices (e.g. screen readers for people with limited or no vision)
• Discussion of our current skill level and topics where we could share information
  • Ryan: Ruby on Rails
  • Elsie: Dreamweaver and Frontpage
  • John: CSS, HTML/XHTML, Accessible Web Design
• Scheduling Future Meetings
  • We will be having a meeting December 13th somewhere in the IMU. Watch for details.
• OpenSolaris Installation session and T-Shirt Raffle
  • Mike and David won Sun t-shirts.
  • Ryan guided participants through the installation while delivering a presentation on OpenSolaris features.
• Participated enjoyed Pizza!

Hey Everyone. This is a reminder that our first meeting will be on December 6th in the IMU River Room.

Good news! The first meeting of the Open Source University Meetup at the University of Iowa will be on December 6th, 2008, at the Iowa Memorial Union in the River Room.

For a while now I have been working on getting official recognition for OSUM as a student group at the U of I, and the paperwork was turned in last week. At last we should be able to reserve some meeting space, send out invitations, and plan our first exciting events.
