First Meeting 9.9.9
By Ryan Kopf - Aug. 25, 2009
9.9.9
6:00pm, 3 MacLean Hall
(September 9, 2009)
The Open Source University Meetup would like to invite you to come to the first meeting of 'OSUM' at the University of Iowa. OSUM works to promote open source and free software, while helping members learn more about technology and open source.
Open source software is free software that permits you to use, change, and
improve the software, and to redistribute it with far fewer restrictions than other software. While you may pay lots of money for word processing software at a store, you could alternatively download software such as OpenOffice.org with the same features and benefits for free. A report by the Standish Group states that the adoption of open source has resulted in a savings of about $60,000,000,000 (60 billion dollars) per year to consumers.
OSUM is a group of UI students, both undergraduate and graduate, interested in open source software, technology, and promoting these great benefits at Iowa. Members get free pizza at OSUM meetings, thanks to Sun Microsystems, and meetings are usually held on Wednesdays starting at 6pm. We start out by talking about general subjects for the entire membership, and later in the meeting talk about technology-specific stuff.
Our first meeting will be about Open Source in general, along with the purpose of OSUM, and we will then talk about "The Cloud" and trends in software development.
RSVP to our first meeting (free pizza), on Facebook:
